Chapter 2: Simple Ideas, Clauses, and Symbols

Chapter 1 introduced universes, facts, situations, claims, and arguments. This chapter begins the practical work of turning ordinary language into clear symbolic form.

Main points in this chapter:

  • The simplest complete claim ordinarily has a subject and a predicate.
  • In this chapter, we begin with discrete claims about one identified person, thing, group, event, or activity. Claims about some and some-but-not-all will be introduced in Chapter 3; universal claims about all or none will be introduced in Chapter 4.
  • Before symbolizing a claim, we distill it: we remove distracting wording while preserving every detail that matters to its meaning or truth.
  • A symbol key assigns meaning to each label. The labels themselves have no built-in meaning.
  • The same label must keep the same meaning throughout one argument or symbol key.
  • A multi-letter predicate may display part of an ordinary-language relationship, but it still functions as one predicate unit in Volume 1.

How Thorough Is Philalethic Logic?

Philalethic Logic is intended to represent and evaluate a broad range of ordinary reasoning. It can examine claims about particular things, categories, quantity, negation, necessity, possibility, and relationships among complete claims.

That does not mean that this introductory volume can express every idea in every possible amount of detail. Volume 1 deliberately begins with a limited language. We will first learn to handle simple clauses, then add quantity, negation, arguments, modality, and compound claims.

The aim is practical thoroughness, not a claim that this introductory language can express every possible idea or settle every technical question. The system is designed to cover many kinds of reasoning that matter in daily life while adding new structure gradually and only when it is needed.

The Simple Clause

Claims can be very short:

“Jesus wept.”

“The kettle whistled.”

“Peter hesitated.”

Claims can also be long and complicated:

“After checking the attic twice and finding no visible staining, the inspector cautiously reported that the roof had probably not leaked during the recent storm.”

Long sentences may contain several ideas. To understand and test them, we begin by identifying their simpler claims. The simplest complete claim ordinarily has two main parts:

  • the subject—what the claim is about;
  • the predicate—what is asserted of the subject.

Consider:

“The kettle whistled.”

The kettle is the subject. Whistled is the predicate.

Consider another:

“David defeated Goliath.”

David is the subject. Defeated Goliath is the predicate. The predicate tells us what is asserted of David.

For now, we treat a simple subject-predicate clause as one complete claim. Logicians often call such a claim atomic. The word does not mean that the sentence has no parts (or that it is explosive). It means that, at this stage, we are treating the clause as one claim rather than dividing it into smaller complete claims.

This chapter begins with discrete subjects: one identified person, thing, group treated as one whole, event, or activity. Examples include Moses, this truck, the jury in this trial, yesterday’s meeting, and reading the report. A sentence such as “Birds migrate” may express a general claim about a category rather than a discrete claim about one subject. Chapters 3 and 4 will show how to represent such quantities accurately.

Subject and Predicate

The grammatical subject does not always appear first in ordinary speech, and the most important logical subject is not always the first noun in a sentence. Part of distilling a claim is deciding what the claim is principally about.

“In the driveway sits the delivery truck.”

This can be restated more directly:

“The delivery truck is in the driveway.”

The delivery truck is the subject. Is in the driveway is the predicate.

The subject may be identified by a proper name:

“Ruth followed Naomi.”

It may be identified by a description:

“The red pickup belongs to Joseph.”

It may also be a group treated collectively as one subject:

“The jury reached a verdict.”

The predicate may express a quality, action, condition, or relationship:

“The wall is damp.”

“The dog barked.”

“The meeting ended.”

“Moses confronted Pharaoh.”

In every case, the predicate is everything asserted of the selected subject.

Distill the Idea

To distill a claim is to express its essential content clearly and directly. Distillation should make the idea easier to examine without changing what is being claimed.

Consider:

“In spite of the pouring rain, heavy traffic, and repeated delays, the determined delivery driver finally brought the urgently needed medicine to the house shortly before midnight.”

A useful distillation might be:

“The driver delivered the medicine before midnight.”

We removed dramatic and descriptive wording, but we preserved the delivery, the medicine, and the time because those details may matter.

Distillation is not merely shortening. A shorter sentence can be less accurate.

“The driver delivered the medicine.”

This loses “before midnight.” If the argument concerns whether the medicine arrived in time, the time qualification is essential.

A good distillation therefore follows three rules:

  1. Preserve every detail that affects the idea’s truth or its role in the argument.
  2. Remove wording that adds emotion, repetition, decoration, or unrelated background.
  3. Use the clearest grammatical form that fits the surrounding reasoning.

Active voice is often helpful because it makes the acting subject clear:

“The council approved the proposal.”

may be clearer than:

“The proposal was approved by the council.”

But active voice is not an absolute rule. If the argument is mainly about the proposal, the passive form may place the more important subject first. The goal is not to force every sentence into one style. The goal is to preserve the intended idea in the form most useful for the argument.

One Sentence May Contain Several Claims

Some sentences should not be compressed into one simple clause.

“The alarm sounded, the dog ran outside, and the neighbor called the police” contains at least three claims:
“The alarm sounded.”
“The dog ran outside.”
“The neighbor called the police.”

Likewise, “Because Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream, Pharaoh placed Joseph in authority” contains at least these claims:

“Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream.”
“Pharaoh placed Joseph in authority.”

The word because also asserts a relationship between them. We will learn to represent relationships among complete claims later. For now, the first task is to notice that several claims are present.

Do Not Distill Away Meaning

Words describing time, place, comparison, law, intention, or point of view may be essential. These are different claims:

“The store is open.”
“The store is open on Sunday.”
“The store is legally permitted to open on Sunday.”

As are these:

“The witness saw the driver.”
“The witness clearly saw the driver’s face.”
“The witness believes she saw the driver.”

The third concerns the witness’s belief, not directly whether she actually saw the driver. A careful symbolization must preserve such differences. The purpose of distillation is clarity, not oversimplification.

Standardize Related Wording

Different expressions may refer to the same subject:

“Saul of Tarsus opposed the church.”
“The future apostle traveled to Damascus.”
“Paul later preached the faith.”

The names Saul and Paul refer to the same man, but the surrounding time and description may matter. When an argument depends upon their identity, the symbol key must represent that identity accurately rather than treating the names as automatically unrelated.

The reverse problem also occurs. The same word may refer to different things:

“The bank approved the loan.”
“The fisherman sat on the bank.”

The word bank has different meanings and must not receive one shared label.

Before symbolizing related claims, decide which words refer to the same subject or the same fully interpreted predicate. Then use consistent terminology. Do not merge expressions merely because they look alike, and do not separate them merely because different words were used.

Symbol Keys and Labels

A symbol is a visible mark used to represent something else. In Philalethic Logic, a standalone capital letter such as A, B, or C is conventionally used as a placeholder for a complete claim or formula. Clause-component labels may use either uppercase or lowercase when their role is clear from the construction or symbol key, although lowercase is preferred for ordinary subject and predicate labels. Handles are written as lowercase primed letters. Case is part of a label’s identity: if b is assigned one meaning, B is a different label and does not inherit that meaning.

Suppose we symbolize “Daniel prayed.” We might use this key:

d = Daniel
p = prayed

The complete formula is:

dp

Another student could use different letters:

D = Daniel
r = prayed
Dr

Either symbolization can be correct. The key must be clear, and each label must be used consistently.

A formula is a symbolic expression treated as one complete unit. Here dp is one formula, while d and p are component labels. Later chapters introduce more complex formulas and capital letters that stand for complete claims or formulas.

For the simple discrete claims in this chapter, the first label identifies one subject. The technical reference calls a label that unambiguously picks out one subject a designator. For now, subject-label is the easier term. The second label represents the complete predicate.

Consider “The porch light is on.” A key might be:

l = the porch light
o = is on

The formula for the claim is:

lo

The predicate-label o means “is on.” It does not mean merely “on” as a loose word, and it certainly does not mean some separate object named o. Its exact meaning is fixed by the key and context.

The Complete Predicate Matters

Suppose:

p = the package
n = arrived before noon
e = arrived eventually

Then pn and pe are different claims. Both predicates contain the idea of arriving, but they do not express the same complete content.

A label must therefore represent the whole relevant predicate, including any time, place, standard, relationship, or respect needed by the claim.

This rule prevents false contradictions. “The door was open at 9:00” and “The door was not open at 10:00” do not conflict. A good symbol key would use different predicate-labels for the different times unless the time difference is already fixed elsewhere in the target situation.

Use Labels Consistently

Within one symbol key:

  • one label should keep one meaning;
  • the same subject should ordinarily keep the same subject-label;
  • the same complete predicate should ordinarily keep the same predicate-label;
  • materially different meanings should receive different labels.

Suppose:

t = Thomas
d = disbelieved Jesus had risen
s = saw Jesus

Then td and ts represent two different claims about Thomas.

Changing d halfway through the argument to mean “disbelieved every report” would silently change the claim’s content and corrupt the analysis.

Case can help make formal roles visually clear, but it does not itself determine formal type. Lowercase is preferred for ordinary clause labels, handles remain lowercase and primed, and standalone capitals such as A, B, and C are conventionally used for complete-claim or formula placeholders. Once a label has been declared in a symbol key, keep its meaning and written form stable. Changing its case produces a different label: b and B are not interchangeable.

The general schematic pattern for a simple discrete clause is sp, where s stands for the subject-label, and p stands for the predicate-label. This is a pattern, not a requirement that every particular claim use the letters s and p.

Multi-letter Predicate Labels

Some predicates contain an important object or relationship:

“Moses confronted Pharaoh.”
“Ruth followed Naomi.”
“The inspector photographed the roof.”

We may represent each entire predicate with one letter:

m = Moses
c = confronted Pharaoh mc

Or we may use a multi-letter predicate to make its ordinary-language structure easier to remember:

m = Moses
Cp = confronted Pharaoh mCp

Here Cp is one complete predicate-label. The p inside Cp helps remind us that Pharaoh is the object of the confrontation, but the formula does not yet analyze Moses and Pharaoh as two independently handled subjects joined by a formal two-place relation.

Likewise:

r = Ruth
fn = followed Naomi rfn

and:

i = the inspector
pR = photographed the roof ipR

In each formula, the entire string after the subject-label functions as one predicate unit.

This limitation is deliberate. Volume 1 begins with monadic predicates—predicates attributed to one selected subject. A later relational language can formally track several independently handled subjects and the ordered relationship among them. Until then, multi-letter predicates preserve useful ordinary-language information without pretending that the internal relation has already been fully analyzed.

A component inside a multi-letter predicate may also help us reuse terminology. For example, p may separately designate Pharaoh when Pharaoh becomes the subject of another clause. Even then, cp remains one predicate-label in mcp. The p inside that predicate is mnemonic; it is not functioning there as a separately bound subject.

Why Symbolize at All?

Ordinary language is rich and subtle. It can also be distracting. Emotion, style, ambiguity, and repeated rewording may hide the structure of an argument.

An argument presents premises as reasons for a conclusion. As Chapter 1 explained, a valid argument must begin with premises that can be true together, and those premises must not be able to be true while the conclusion is false.

Symbolization helps us test that structure. It makes it easier to see:

  • when the same subject appears in several claims;
  • when the same predicate is repeated;
  • when a word has changed meaning;
  • when two different expressions refer to one subject;
  • when one sentence contains several claims;
  • and eventually, whether the premises support the conclusion.

Consider:

“The red pickup belongs to Joseph.”
“Joseph’s truck needs new tires.”

If the red pickup and Joseph’s truck are the same vehicle, inconsistent wording may hide the connection. A symbol key can make the intended identity visible.

Symbols do not replace careful interpretation. A bad symbolization gives a precise-looking representation of the wrong idea. The work of understanding the language comes first.

Contrast with Other Systems

Aristotle did not develop a fully symbolic calculus, although he used letters to display general patterns of reasoning.

Modern propositional logic often assigns one capital letter to an entire claim. “Daniel prayed” might simply become P. This makes relationships among complete claims easy to study, but it hides the internal subject-predicate structure.

Modern predicate logic usually separates the predicate from the individual and writes the predicate first. “Daniel prayed” might become P(d), where P means prayed and d means Daniel.

Philalethic Logic ordinarily preserves the movement of the natural-language clause:

The subject-label comes first and the predicate-label follows. This choice is intended to make the first steps from ordinary language into symbolism easier to see.

Before turning to the chapter summary, it is worth considering an earlier attempt to connect symbolic precision with the improvement of reasoning.

Other Systems of Logic: Leibniz’s Characteristica Universalis

In the seventeenth century, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz imagined a characteristica universalis: a universal symbolic language capable of representing complex ideas with precision.

Leibniz hoped that some disputes could be clarified by calculation rather than endless verbal disagreement. Instead of continuing to quarrel, the disputants might say, in effect, “Let us calculate.”

He never completed this universal language. Still, the underlying insight was important: unclear words and shifting meanings often produce unclear reasoning, while careful symbols can reveal structure.

Philalethic Logic adopts a more modest goal. It does not assign one permanent symbol to every idea. It uses a temporary symbol key for the argument or subject matter under examination. The symbols display enough structure to make the reasoning clear while ordinary language preserves the ideas’ full content.

In Summary

A simple discrete claim ordinarily contains a subject and a predicate. The subject identifies what the claim is about. The predicate states what is asserted of that subject.

Before symbolizing, distill the claim. Remove distracting wording, but preserve every qualification that affects meaning, truth, or the claim’s role in the argument. A sentence containing several claims should be separated rather than forced into one clause.

A symbol key assigns meaning to labels. The labels themselves are arbitrary, but each label must retain the same meaning and written form. Case is a readability convention rather than a formal type marker. Lowercase is preferred for ordinary clause labels, while standalone capitals such as A, B, and C conventionally stand for complete claims or formulas. Once a label is declared, keep its meaning and written form stable. Uppercase and lowercase versions of the same letter are distinct labels.

In the basic form sp, s is the subject-label and p is the predicate-label. A particular claim may use any clear letters, such as dp for “Daniel prayed.”

A multi-letter predicate such as cp in mcp may preserve the ordinary-language idea “confronted Pharaoh,” but it still functions as one predicate unit in Volume 1.

Symbolization is not a substitute for understanding. It is a tool for making understood ideas and argument structures easier to inspect.

Informal Fallacy: Equivocation

Equivocation occurs when an important word or phrase changes meaning during an argument while being treated as though it had remained the same. The argument may look connected because the same sound or spelling appears in each premise, but the ideas being expressed are different.

This is precisely why symbol keys require stable labels. If one occurrence of a word would need one predicate label and another occurrence would need a different label, using the same label for both would conceal the shift rather than clarify the argument.

Example. A committee promises “equal treatment” for every applicant. Someone then argues that any accommodation gives one applicant something others do not receive, so accommodations violate equal treatment. The first use of “equal treatment” may mean applying one fair standard while accounting for relevant differences. The second means giving everyone exactly the same thing. The conclusion follows only after the meaning has shifted.

Not every change in wording is equivocation. Two phrases may express the same idea, and one word may be used in a carefully defined technical sense throughout an argument. The problem arises when a material difference in meaning performs unnoticed logical work.

Diagnostic question. Would every occurrence of the disputed term receive the same definition and the same label in a careful symbol key?


Exercise: Distill Without Changing the Claim

Reduce each sentence to a clear expression while preserving every detail that could matter.

  1. “After circling the block twice because of road construction, the home inspector arrived at the property three minutes before the scheduled appointment.”
  2. “Although Peter had confidently promised loyalty, he denied knowing Jesus three times before the cock crowed.”
  3. “The exhausted nurse delivered the medication to Room 214 shortly after midnight.”
  4. “Despite several warnings from his mechanic, Daniel continued driving the truck while the oil-pressure light was on.”
  5. “The city council, after two hours of heated public testimony, approved the revised ordinance by one vote.”

Exercise: Separate the Claims

Identify the distinct complete claims contained in each sentence. Do not yet symbolize the words connecting those claims.

  1. “The smoke alarm sounded, and everyone left the house.”
  2. “Because Ruth remained with Naomi, they traveled to Bethlehem together.”
  3. “The package arrived, but the contents were damaged.”
  4. “The witness recognized the driver and immediately called the police.”
  5. “Thomas doubted the report until he saw Jesus.”

Identify the selected subject and the complete predicate in each clause.

Choose labels, write a symbol key, and symbolize each discrete claim.

Symbolize each claim using a multi-letter predicate. Remember that everything after the subject-label remains one predicate unit.

  1. “David defeated Goliath.”
  2. “Ruth followed Naomi.”
  3. “The dog chased the squirrel.”
  4. “The mechanic repaired the truck.”
  5. “Mary anointed Jesus.”

Exercise: Consistency Across Related Claims

Create one symbol key for each set and use it consistently throughout that set.

Set 1

“Moses confronted Pharaoh.”

“Pharaoh refused Moses’ demand.”

“Moses warned Pharaoh.”

Set 2

“The red pickup belongs to Joseph.”

“Joseph’s truck needs tires.”

“The truck is parked beside the garage.”

Set 3

“Saul traveled toward Damascus.”

“Saul encountered Jesus.”

“Paul later preached the gospel.”

For Set 3, explain how you represented the fact that Saul and Paul are the same man while the claims concern different times.

Exercise: Preserve the Meaning

Explain why each proposed distillation is acceptable or unacceptable.

  1. Original: “The pharmacy closes at 8:00 tonight.” Proposed: “The pharmacy closes.”
  2. Original: “The witness believes the light was red.” Proposed: “The light was red.”
  3. Original: “The driver arrived exactly on time.” Proposed: “The driver arrived on time.”
  4. Original: “The soup is too salty for Maria.” Proposed: “The soup is too salty.”
  5. Original: “The council legally approved the permit.” Proposed: “The council approved the permit.”
